Frank Bishop 1921 - 2009

Sadly, as most of you will be aware, we lost Frank this year. Frank's greatest hobby was his walking, which he started in his 40s with his pal, Benny Fisher. He joined both the RA and our club, where he met friends like Jack Hanson, Dot Brewer, Ruby Beresford, Keith Brocklebank, Pat Ellam etc.
Most will remember him for his meticulous planning of walks.
He joined the HF in 1980 and first led a walk on Sunday 15 August 1982 to Blackstone Edge, near Rochdale.
He then led more than 100 walks including 35 weekend, 26 mid week and 19 evening walks. Frank also found time to organise 8 YHA weekends between 1991 and 1996. The last walk he led was on Wednesday 13 June 2007 at Appleton Reservoir. His final outing on a club walk was Christmas 2008.
How he found time to drink gallons of tea as well as eat all the time is a complete mystery.
In his 80s he enjoyed club walking holidays in Calpe, Chamonix, Poland and the Dolomites.
Frank joined the committee in 1985 and served for 22 years and he made a major contribution, preparing programmes and organising 6 Christmas Walks and Meals between 2000 and 2006.
He was also Vice Chairman 1997 -2005 when he was awarded Honorary Membership.
In recognition of his many contributions he received an award at the 60th Anniversary Dinner.
We have a lot to remember him for, his cheerfulness, his optimism and New Year Spot Prizes and Quizzes.
His driving, we are told, was legendary - never had an accident, but seen hundreds behind him.
He loved his walking and we all loved Frank.

A short memorial walk will be held on Sunday 10 January, led by Jan Pritchard, his eldest daughter. Everyone is welcome to attend - see programme for details.

Autumn Club Weekend
The weekend of 9th/12th October 2009 saw us return to the Patterdale Hotel where we enjoyed excellent food and were looked after by friendly and helpful staff. The walking is always good in this part of the Lakes and we were very pleased that Trevor and Lynn Ratcliffe volunteered to lead the walks on two days.
On Saturday we all stayed together as Helvellyn was covered in cloud and the planned A Walk was postponed to Sunday. We caught the bus to Aira Force Waterfall and then walked South West over the fells, over Watermillock Common, through woodland and past Glenridding to return to the hotel. All in good weather!
Sunday we again saw heavy cloud covering the tops, so we all walked to Brotherswater, via Goldrill Beck. The majority then returned to Patterdale via the valley. An interprid six, having missed Helvellyn again went up Dovedale to Gill Crag and back via the long ridge to Patterdale.
A good weekend was enjoyed by all.

Autumn Supper
Jane Burton organised the September Autumn Supper at the General Elliot in Croft. It was great to see everyone, including Frank Bishop, enjoying the good food on offer. Thanks to Jane for organising this.

Morecambe Bay Walk
In September, 37 walkers from our club joined the 174 people walking across the nine miles from Hest Bank to Grange, with the guide Alan Sledmore.
It was a fantastic experience crossing the three main channels, sometimes thigh deep, which had the dogs swimming.
The views all round were brilliant and we were fortunate that the weather was kind to us. The only difficulties were eating and lack of loos (i.e. no trees).

Den's Tip
Don't wear sandals or you will need a box of Compeed plasters stuck to your feet - looked really good on holiday the following week.

AGM : Wednesday, 14th October
Only 25 members attended the AGM. Thanks go to all who did attend, but it is a little disappointing when we have about 140 members. Reports were given from the officers of the club. The accounts are in surplus by £186.20 for the year, and therefore subs will remain at £8. The committee was re-elected as is, with the inclusion of Phil Barrowcliff who had to stand down earlier in the year for personal reasons but has now returned to us.

Walks
Thanks particularly to all new leaders this year. Peter White led a good long walk near Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, an area we do not get to very often.
Sue Bell led one in the South Lakes, but the Fairfield Horseshoe in July was abandoned due to bad weather, but Sue quickly adapted this to an enjoyable low level walk from Ambleside.
Howard Thornley contributed a pleasant evening walk at Pennington Flash and day walks at Bentham and Anglezarke.
Wilma Muirhead led a well attended evening walk at Frodsham.
Without leaders there would not be walks to enjoy, so thanks to all who gave up their time to lead this year.

Charter for Leaders and Walkers
Please see the Charter attached. We all enjoy our walking but need to be mindful that safety is paramount.
The Leader must lead the walk and is ultimately responsible for the safety of participating walkers.
However, all walkers have a responsibility too, both for themselves and others in the group.
To ensure we continue to enjoy walks without incidents or accidents please take time to read through the Charter and follow its guidelines.

Ten Pin Bowling
On Friday, 20th November at LA Bowl Warrington we had 18 bowlers for two games with a buffet to follow.
The ladies prize, for the second year running, went to Nova Morris with a total of 211 Pins. The mens prize went to Phil Barrowcliff, with 279 pins.
The winning team was Sandra Black, Trevor Ratcliffe, Paul Hundrup and David Lloyd, who incidentally, scored the best individual score of 153, so he will have to polish the trophy first.
A mention for Derek, who bowled three strikes in his second game - well done!

New Year Party : Friday, 8th January 2010
After last year's terrifically successful party, Gordon has again booked Thelwall British Legion, with the same group but an improved buffet.
Tickets are still only £10 and are on sale now from Gordon Sloane or any committee member.

Spring Supper : Wednesday, 7th April 2010
We have booked the Memphis Belle at Westbrook, Warrington. With a Diamond Club which you all should still have, we can enjoy 2 courses (you choose which) for £6.75.
Names to Dennis Carter by 20 March 2010 please.

Walking in Europe
On 17th February we will be departing for a week in Calpe, Cost Blanca with some exciting walks lined up.
During that week we plan to celebrate the birthdays of two of our members on the famous Sierra Bernia Walk. Photos of previous holidays in Calpe can be found on the website

Late Sept, early October we are planning a week in the Alpujarras (near Granada), where we will be staying near Capiliera. The summit of Mulhacen, the highest mountain in Spain is a target for the more strenuous walkers, but there are plenty of other activities, including a trip to the beautiful Alhambra Palace.

Details from Phil Barrowcliff or Jan Sherlock
